Scary pictures of the cod: Lean and full of parasites

Starved and full of parasites. A new documentary gives a bleak picture of the cod in the Baltic Sea.
- The cod is small and lean. It starves to death, says journalist Peter Löfgren.

Researchers are alerting that the number of mature cod in the eastern Baltic and the Kattegat is decreasing. But it's not just about getting fewer - many are also starving and full of worms.
"The cod is starving to death"

In the new documentary "The cod - the hope of the sea", journalist Peter Löfgren gives a bleak picture of how the cod feels.

- In the past year I have tried to find large cod in the Baltic Sea. I have traveled with prominent researchers, fishermen and the best divers, but we have not succeeded. The cod is small and lean. It starves to death, he says in the morning studio.
Parasite kills dead

The documentary also shows that several cod are full of worms. The mask comes from the seals, which have become more and more in the Baltic Sea. In the seals' feces there are eggs that small fish get in themselves. When the cod in turn eat these fish, the parasite enters into the cod's liver.

- In every cod we find, this parasite is now available. It is not only nasty to eat it, but it also damages the cod, says Peter Löfgren.

How does this affect us humans?

- We can also get sick and get a stomach ache. But it is possible to cook it so that the mask disappears, or you freeze it. But the problem does not just concern us people, but the cod dies. If the cod disappears, algal blooms increase, which means that we get dead bottoms, where no life can exist.
